When leaving voice mail, what does it mean to leave a callback number?

When you call to leave a voice mail, sometimes it let's your press 1 (or another number) in order to leave a callback number. What does that mean? Do I still get to leave a message if I do that? So what is a call back number? I just leave my number in the message. Is a call back number different? I don't understand why I would want to leave a number without a message.
