FCC planning to transition phone system from circuit-switched to all-IP net?
Q1) pros & cons? Q2) would a nationalized broadband infrastructure for our public phone network affect anything else?

- I could be wrong but I bet switching phones over to broadband would allow easier monitoring without a warrant. It will just add more traffic to our already clogged up internet. They keep increasing capacity but content like high def movies are also taking more and more bandwidth.
- Would that make the system completely dependent on electricity? The existing landline system will function when local power is out. For something as vital as communication I kind of like having redundant systems. Alternatives = robustness. As for signal intelligence, government already records what it wants to, we've lost that battle because we did not fight it. Privacy is an obsolete concept now.
- WHAT??? So now I have to buy a computer!!! Wait a minute, I guess I've already got one. But is the government going to be handing out computer vouchers (a la Digital TV vouchers) to those that aren't already hooked up? When my computer goes down, or any other in a long list of computer related glitches, will I have a land line option? I'm thinking that hackers and virus makers will be having a field day.
- I don't find any problem to that if they switched to an IP net addresses. Well is iPv6 final? iPv4 just ran out of addresses. Someday virtual PBX phone system will be the future. No hardware needed!
