how to use japan-made mobile phones in USA?

i bought Toshiba W44T from Japan, the dealer said it's for japan-use only, but i really want to use it in the US. 1. it won't work you would have to travel to japan to make a call good luck
2. Unfortunately, it won't work in the U.S., unless you activate it in Japan and sign up for international roaming service, but it would cost you an arm and a leg.
