- "PABX" actually means PBX. You are talking about Voice over IP ("VoIP"). "PBX" means "private branch exchange" and when used with IP networks it is a way for people and businesses to set up a phone system that uses networks instead of phone lines. If you google "VoIP PBX" you will get over 3 million hits.
- PBX is a Private Branch Exchange. Essentially a mini telephone switching system which is used within a private companies facilities to interconnect all the internal corporate telephones. It will usually terminate with the local telco lines to facilitate calls to and from outside the company walls. IP-PBX is an Internet Protocol based PBX system. Typically an IP-PBX will operate over a local Ethernet network and use the benefits of Ethernet packet switching. The IP-PBX will often run on a local PC-based server or in a stand-alone hardware device with firmware that does all the switching, voice mail, IVR, call forwarding, and has an interface to connect to the external Internet and PSTN telco lines. IP-PBX's are the most cost effective way for companies to link their internal phone systems and long distance calling while keeping their costs far below the old traditional PSTN based telco systems costs. This is because all long distance calls are routed over the Internet - either via the public or privately managed backbone links. IP-PBX's are essentially a form of VoIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol. One company that provides IP-PBX software solutions is 3CX Corp. http://www.3cx.com/ http://www.3cx.com/PBX/IP-PBX-overview.html Cisco provides some very complex IP-based phone systems - most notably the "Cisco Unified Communications System". This is a complex system more suited for the enterprise systems. For very small companies, the Cisco SPA8000 and SPA9000 are well known IP-based small systems. There is a distinct difference between these two systems. The Cisco SPA8000 "Telephony Gateway" is really an 8-port IP-based ATA (analog telephone adapter) . It will terminate 8 "Analog telephone lines within a small company. It can be configured to register with external VoIP services and provide analog lines to 8 internal "analog" company phones. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10025/index.html The Cisco SPA9000 Voice System is capable of supporting up to 16 "IP-Telephones". It will also accomodate 2-analog phones. However, it is intended to interface with internally connected IP-Phones (not analog phones). This means all telephones are interconnected via local network Ethernet cables using IP packets. It actually is a mini IP-PBX. The SPA9000 can also register with external VoIP service providers for world-wide termination to external lines using public Internet or private IP backbones. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10031/index.html
