How do you leave a voice mail without calling someone?

I believe it is called backdoor messaging or something like that i have a cingular phone how do i leave someone a voice mail without calling them and having to endure a conversation I am not in the mood to have i believe you have to dial in someone mail box number but i have no idea what that is anyone here can help me out?

1. You call your voicemail and it will give you instruction on how to do it. Sprint does it. I call my voicemail and I go to settings.
2. just go to a message they left you and it will give you the option to respond by voicemail.
