Toshiba Phone System

can a phone line to a (non voip) pbx be substituted with a voip line?

Just wondering if I could use the voip line coming from my naked dsl modem, to plug in my pbx system instead of using a direct phone line. Essentially the info pumped through the voip line from the modem is the same as a regular phone line right? so is this a work around to upgrading my existing functional pbx with an ip pbx? at home i have naked dsl and i have an dsl voip modem/router which has a voip line built in. Basically u enter all the sip details into the modem then plug a regular phone into the voip plug hole in the modem. will a pbx work through this phone port too?

  1. confused? how is VoIP being pumped thru your modem? it you are referring to an ATA (analog telephone adapter) they yes, you can use an ATA with SIP trunking to use as an analog line connected to a PBX... keep in mind that you would probably still want your provider to set up the call hunting (roll over) for when one line is busy it will hunt to the next line.. not sure how many lines your PBX has/needs, but a linksys SPA8000 is capable of providing 8 SIP trunk lines, and can connect to your PBX with either individual line cords for each line, or with a 25 pair amphenol cable.. EDIT - still never saw an all in one modem/router/ATA at least not for DSL... I would assume that too many people would plug it in wrong... anyhow... yes you can connect the VoIP from your FXS port on the ATA device to an FXO port on your PBX...
  2. In most cases, yes. I have an 8x8, Ooma and Verizon Wireless Home connect, along with the landline as my 4 ports on my Panasonic key system. I have also tested a Magic Jack in a pinch. Depending on your PBX brand, there may be some voltage and ringing problems from the output of the ATA to your PBX input so it's not a guarantee.
