Can I still receive voice mail with my fax machine hooked up?

I have Verizon's voice mail service and recently had to hook a fax machine up to the phone line - one line, one number. I had to set the number of rings to 4 on the fax machine so that it would pick up since my voicemail picks up on the 6th ring. I was wondering if I can set this all up so that it knows when it is an actual phone call and it should go through to voicemail. Thank you!
