Why would a phone that has been shut off for a year suddenly start ringing that it has a voice mail?

I have a sprint that hasn't had service in a year I have it for the alarm clock and pictures. all of a sudden i start getting the alert that i have a voice mail. it has happened 3 times . any answers? and no i cant get to the voice mails.

  1. Phone companies recycle numbers. You should call Sprint and tell them what is happening. They should be able to deactivate your phone remotely.
  2. phones are wacky these days mines used to do that too.. its just the firmware in the phone is wackyyy due to its not on service
  3. I don't know why it happens, but we had a similar experience with our old phone. We got new phones and activated them, then one day this past year some text messages that were sent between my husband and I somehow showed up on one of the old phones. No clue how it happened :P. Pat is right about companies recycling numbers, but I'm assuming that you are still using that number, but on a different phone, which when activating the new phone deactivates the old phone. Even if you'd just terminated the service, it would still be deactivated when you ended your service (and especially when a different phone got activated for that phone number).
