What does the acronym ACD stand for in IP Telephony and how does it work?

My boss has asked me to look into putting a plan into place to convert our current phone system to an IP system, and mentioned something called an ACD, what does this mean? Also, what types of IP Telephony are there for implementation and what are the pros and cons of each? Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
