- They are one and the same creature. VoIP is short for Voice Over IP, aka IP telephony, where you're taking digitized voice traffic and sending it over an IP network (the internet) instead of regular phone lines. Some people think there's a difference between voip that's used on a computer and voip that's used with a phone, but they also are the same thing; it's only the equipment that's different. Depending on your calling plan, you can make calls from computer-to-computer, computer-to-phone, and phone-to-phone.
