- IP telephony takes digitized voice and packages into computerized data packets. Just as a normal Internet data packet might contain a picture or text, an IP telephony packet carries digitized voice. Voice over IP (VoIP) developed because phone companies where charging large amounts for long distance calls, but voice takes up very little space (less then 64kb/s) in high speed data line. Companies found that they could slash their telephone costs by turning it into data than ran over the data lines they already paid for. However, since phone companies have digitized voice in the back-end, and now offer very low long distance, the cost benefits have decrease. Also, international regulation of VoIP has hindered its development.
- Internet telephony (IPT) is transport of telephone calls over the Internet, no matter whether traditional telephony devices, multimedia PCs or dedicated terminals take part in the calls and no matter whether the calls are entirely or only partially transmitted over the Internet.
