Voice over DSL vs VOIP telephony?

Voice over DSL is reputedly better than Voice over IP. Could anyone tell me the difference, in layman's terms preferably?

  1. voip is more common and it works with ip phones where as voice over dsl requires a pc with software but can be better as it can use the broadband to send information where a voip uses a limits but normally reserve amount of bandwidth to insure that calls are clear and reliable
  2. dsl is a technology to run digital communications over existing copper pairs (exisitng telephone lines). you can purchase a dsl data service, or you can bundle voice and data services over your dls connection - either way you most often end up (in residential settings) with your voice and data running over the same wires. with POTS, the signal gets converted from analog to digital at the central office of the phone company - if you use a dsl voice service then you can get digital voice all the way to your location. a signal that is digital from end-to-end can generally provide better quality. but if you just buy a data dsl service then you can just run voip over that dsl line. dsl is simply an underlying technology, voip is the same regardless of running it over cable, ethernet, WAN links, etc.
