- Voice over Internet Protocol... Basically telephones using the internet to 'talk' instead of using telephone lines. The voice quality is better* (if it's setup right) and there is no such thing as long distance because it's connected to the internet. the only downfall is that 911 services are not always available.
- VOIP stands for "voice over internet procotol". It is a technology that allows to make a phone call over the internet. While technically you often still use a phone line (to connect to the internet) it can be much cheaper as a regular phone call as you do only pay for the internet connection. You do not necessarily need a computer for it, as there are special phones that use this technology.
- stands for voice over ip protocol Generally they are the services that allow you to use the internet for phoning There are a multitude of different services all are a bit different depending on your needs and the marketing Skype - owned by ebay you dial from a program on your computer you can phone throughout the world It rings on the other person's computer - they do not need a computer for $ 30 a year you can call throughout North America (US and Canada) 24/7 total you can call throughout the world to places already discounted for example isreal and india it is not cheaper. To other places it may be 2) icall same as skype in that you call from your computer via a program free to call within north america 3) Vonage - you need a vonage box and have someone set it up like a router you attach to your high speed broadband internet line you just dial out over your regular phone which is attached to the vonage box you pay a monthly fee you can have an incoming phone number anywhere in the us and canada actually throughout the world 3) Jajah you initate a phone call via a web based interface www.jajah.com both phones are connected. After the initiation ( on a website you connect i am at phone,,,, and i want to connect to ....) both phones ring. Neither side needs a computer at that point. inexpensive to call. Very good phone quality as stays up at a higher internet rate rather than coming down to your computer as in skype. If both parties are signed up as members ( free) you can call many places of the world (North America , most parts of europe , china , israel ) for up to an hour a day , or 5 hours a week ( as suggested by Jajah - not to be abusive in service use ) at no charge. There is no catch to these services. They are legitimate services in the cases above where there are no charge calls or minimal charges it is marketing. Unless the service is used it is an unbought , unused good. The whole idea is to get people to use the service and see how easy they are to use and the level of phone quality Jajah gives you a free 5 minute test call. If you are going to use Skype or icall a good headset ( Logitech or Microsoft Lifechat 3000 ) will make all the difference in the world. hope this helps there are no shortage of these voip services you can buy vonage boxes at big box stores like best buy or staples there are ton of voip services now
- Voice over Internet Protocol, also called VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network VoIP can facilitate tasks that may be more difficult to achieve using traditional networks: Ability to transmit more than one telephone call down the same broadband-connected telephone line. This can make VoIP a simple way to add an extra telephone line to a home or office. Incoming phone calls can be automatically routed to your VoIP phone, regardless of where you are connected to the network. Take your VoIP phone with you on a trip, and wherever you connect to the Internet, you can receive incoming calls. Free phone numbers for use with VoIP are available in the USA, UK and other countries from organizations such as VoIP User. Call center agents using VoIP phones can work from anywhere with a sufficiently fast and stable Internet connection. Many VoIP packages include PSTN features that most telcos (telecommunication companies) normally charge extra for, or may be unavailable from your local telco, such as 3-way calling, call forwarding, automatic redial, and caller ID. VoIP is location independent, only an internet connection is needed to get a connection to a VoIP provider. VoIP phones can integrate with other services available over the Internet, including video conversation, message or data file exchange in parallel with the conversation, audio conferencing, managing address books and passing information about whether others (e.g. friends or colleagues) are available online to interested parties
