Static IP Address?

I am trying to change my computers ip address so that I can work with the phone system. I am getting an error "static ip address that was just configured is already in use on the network. Reconfigure a different ip address". This is the only ip address that I know I am able to use for the phone system. How do I find out who is using this ip address (work at a school....lots of computers) and kick them off? Someone said that since we are using sonicwall, it may have something to do with that. Is this true? All help would be greatly appreciated.

1. The administrator should have a list of IP addresses and who is using it. You cannot use it till that number is changed. Is that part of the DHCP scope? If that IP address is part of the DHCP pool that is being issued by your DHCP server then you need to remove it from the pool. Check that before you go checking the computers. You could get a log printed from the router that shows the association between MAC addresses and IP addresses.
2. if u want to make sure whether some one is using your IP address.. give a ping with the ip address u want to check from command prompt ------------------------- for example to check if some one is using xx.ww.ee.rr address open command prompt in windows machine (system->run->cmd) type ping -t xx.ww.ee.rr -------------------------- if u get reply then it means that some one is using that ip address
