How is some one sending message to my voice mail without ringing it, and no number left missed or received?

I have received two messages (almost threatening), both times the cell phone is with me, but no ring. I get the message alert, and it is a nasty voice mail. I have no missed call, or any new number in the call list. How is this possible, and how do I find this person?

1. People can send you a "voice message." I do it sometimes when I am a)not willing to have a conversation right then with the person b) don't feel like texting. You simply click on the person in your phone book/list of numbers and you click options and then you press "voice message"... You can file a police report. My mom had to do it before. You have to go to the police station and tell them what's going on and give them permission to contact your phone company on your behalf.
